Stephen Sondheim & John Weidman have written a new version of “Four Black Dragons” and “Next” (both from Pacific Overtures) to refer to the Tohoku earthquake. It will be premiered at the Shinsai: Theaters for Japan benefit on Sunday, March 11. You can read the new version of the songs at Talkin’ Broadway.

Remember that article from December announcing that The Dramatists Guild had uncovered a bunch of old reel to reel tapes of their members giving lectures about their work? Well, they’ve launched a podcast from those archives, and the first episode features a Stephen Sondheim talk from the early 1970s — he claims it’s his first — in which he sings a couple of songs that had been cut from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

It’s utterly delightful. I’m sure you’ll think so too.

In fact, there’s only one. Versatility of such a high caliber is rare indeed, and therefore it couldn’t be more appropriate that the recipient of this year’s Signature Theatre Sondheim Award is going to the best tuba player on Broadway: Patti LuPone.”
